Summary

A Douglas A-1J Skyraider (BuNo 142076) of attack squadron VA-25 Fist of the Fleet on the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea (CVA-43) in 1967. VA-25 was assigned to Attack Carrier Air Wing 15 (CVW-15) for a deployment to Vietnam from 26 July 1967 to 8 April 1968. The Skyraider is armed with two LAU-3 and two "Zuni" rocket launchers. A-1J 142076 was the sixth last produced A-1 and later passed on the the USAF. It was heavily damaged in March 1972 and written off. In the background are two bombed-up Douglas A-4E Skyhawks of VA-153 Blue Tail Flies to the right and three McDonnell F-4B Phantom II fighters of fighter squadron VF-151 Vigilantes (BuNos 150446, 150447, 153913), armed with AIM-7 and AIM-9D missiles. In the foreground a Grumman E-2A Hawkeye of airborne early warning squadron VAW-116 Sun Kings is partly visible. This A-1J is seen outfitted with the new Stanley Aviation 'Yankee Extraction System' (the angled white tube behind the seat is the Yankee extraction rocket), of which were installed in all VA-25 A-1 aircraft at NS Subic Bay, PI, between 28 Oct 67 and 11 Nov 67. Therefore, this picture was taken in late 1967, sometime after 12 Nov 67, and was likely taken on Yankee Station, during the line period of 13 Nov-07 Dec 1967.
