Summary
Gordon Laing House, Timbuktu.
- Timbuktu was so remote and hard to get to, it was once of the last cities reached by European explorers. In the 19th century, for the first time, a handful of Europeans made it there and stayed for a while.
- This is where Gordon Laing stayed after he arrived in Timbuktu. Laing, a Scot, is usually credited as being the first European to make it to the city, but never returned as he was killed on his way back to Europe.
