Summary
The Lion Monument (Löwendenkmal) in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucerne" class="extiw" title="en:Lucerne">en:Lucerne</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switzerland" class="extiw" title="en:Switzerland">en:Switzerland</a>. This monument, carved by Danish sculptor <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bertel_Thorvaldsen" class="extiw" title="en:Bertel Thorvaldsen">en:Bertel Thorvaldsen</a> in 1819, commemorates the sacrifice of more than six hundred <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_Guards" class="extiw" title="en:Swiss Guards">en:Swiss Guards</a> ("Gardes suisse") who died defending the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuileries" class="extiw" title="en:Tuileries">en:Tuileries</a> Palace in Paris at the time of the overthrow of the French Monarchy on <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/10_August" class="extiw" title="en:10 August">en:10 August</a> <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1792" class="extiw" title="en:1792">en:1792</a> during the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Revolution" class="extiw" title="en:French Revolution">en:French Revolution</a>. The Swiss Guards were the most senior of the thirteen regiments of Swiss mercenaries in the Royal Army and had served with distinction since the seventeenth century. The monument portrays a dying lion lying across broken symbols of the French monarchy.
