Summary
Corner of the orphanage of the Chiesa della Pietà in Venice where the foundling wheel once stood. The inscription states: "The Lord God strikes with curses and excommunications those who send or permit to be sent their sons, or daughters if legitimate, as bastards to this Hospital of Piety having the means and power to raise such, being obligated to compensation of any damages and expenses incurred for them, for which they may be absolved even if this is not fulfilled, as appears clearly in the bull of our lord Pope Paul III dated 12 November 1548."
