Gopalganj is one of the administrative districts in the Indian state of Bihar. The district headquarters is the town of Gopalganj, and the district is part of Saran Division.[1] Major languages spoken are Bhojpuri, Urdu and Hindi.

Gopalganj District comes into existence on 2 October’1973. Earlier it was a part of old Saran District and has closed linked with the history of parent’s district. Earlier it was a Sub – Division of Saran District.

The District of Gopalganj is located on the West –North corner of the Bihar State. Between 83.54° - 85.56° latitude and 26.12° - 26.39°North Attitude. It is bounded on East by Champaran and river Gandak on the South by Siwan District and on the North West Deoria District of Uttar Pradesh. The river Gandak supported by tributaries like Jharahi, Khanwa, Daha, Dhanahi etc give a big status of river. Due to this land of District is fertile and alluvial because of this river the District is good in cultivation and irrigation. The river imparts prosperity to the people to play and important role in making the District significant and unique. River Gandak by depositing the top quality of soil bringing from the Nepal, place and important role in the economy of the District.

Historical Background

Historians establish on the basis of analysis of evidences that this place was underthe king of Videh during Vaidic age. During the Aryan period a schedule tribe Vaman King Chero roled the place. The rulers of that time were found of making temple and other religious supports. It is one of the reasons that there are so many temples and others religious places are within the reason. Some significant temples and religious supports within the district are Durga’s temple of Thawe, fort of Manjha, Vaman Gandey Pond of Dighwa Dubauli, Fort of King Malkhan of Sirisia, Kuchaykot etc.

People of Gopalganj where always in the lime light either it be thestruggle for freedom. Including J. P. movement and movements for women education and movement against non payment of tax and prohibition of 1930. Under the leadership of Babu Ganga Vishnu Rai and Babu Sunder Lal of Bankatta. In 1935 Pandit Bhopal Pandey gave his life for the freedom of the country.

People of Gopalganj are indebted to the freedom fighters to who gave there lives for motherland. During Mahabharat age this region was under the King Bhuri Sarwa. During 13th Century and 16th Century the place was ruled by Sultan of Bengal Gayasuddin Abbas and Babar.

Geography

Gopalganj district, India occupies an area of 2,033 square kilometres (785 sq mi),[2] comparatively equivalent to Spain's Tenerife Island.[3]

Geographical Location of Gopalganj district lies between 26° 12 to 26° 39 North latitudes 83° 54 to 84° 55 East longitudes. The district occupies an area of 2033 km² and has population of 2,149,343 (as of 2001).

Economy

In 2006 the Ministry of Panchayati Raj named Gopalganj one of the country's 250 most backward districts (out of a total of 640).[4] It is one of the 38 districts in Bihar currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF).[4]

Demographics

According to the 2011 census Gopalganj district, India has a population of 2,558,037,[5] roughly equal to the nation of Kuwait[6] or the US state of Nevada.[7] This gives it a ranking of 163rd in India (out of a total of 640).[5] The district has a population density of 1,258 inhabitants per square kilometre (3,260/sq mi) .[5] Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 18.83%.[5] Gopalganj has a sex ratio of 1015 females for every 1000 males,[5] and a literacy rate of 67.04%.[5]

Politics

Abdul Gafoor was a politician who became the Chief Minister of Bihar.

Laloo Prasad Yadav and his wife Smt. Rabri Devi are also from the same district.

Ram Dulari Sinha, a member of parliament, was born in Gopalganj district.

Education

Initially Gopalganj had little to offer in terms of good quality education to its residents. Presently Schools and colleges in the city are either run by the government or by private trusts and individuals. The schools are each affiliated with either the Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE), or the Bihar School Examination Board.[9] English is the medium of instruction in most private schools; though government run schools offer both English and Hindi. After completing their secondary education, which involves ten years of schooling, students typically enroll at Higher Secondary School in one of the three streams—Arts, Commerce or Science.

Health services

The city has 17 hospitals, 19 primary health centres, and 80 sub-centres. The district has a network of government-run health facilities consisting of the district hospital, rural hospitals, primary health centres, sub-centres and dispensaries provide basic healthcare to the rural population.

The city has good communication facilities also. It has a fully computerized head post office and other 41 branch post offices, 11 telegraph offices and many telecom service providers like Aircel, Airtel, Idea cellular, Vodafone, Uninor, MTS, S-Tel, Tata Indicom, Docomo, Reliance Infocomm, and the state owned BSNL.

Media

There is also a local FM radio station named Radio Rimjhim and TV broadcasting channel.There are over five cinema halls that screen movies in Bhojpuri and Hindi, the first of which, Janta Cinema, was set up in 1958, by Mr. Phuldeo Prasad,Saraswati Cinema at Jadopur Chowke and Shyam Cinema Hall. Popular news papers include Dainik Jagran, Dainik Hindustan, Aaj, Prabhat Khabar, Hindustan Times, Sahara Samay, Times of India, etc. .gopalganj is situated on gandak river.

Sports

The city owns indoor and outdoor stadiums namely Ambedkar Bhavan and Minz Stadium respectively.

Languages

Languages Bhojpuri with almost 40 000 000 speakers, written in the Devanagari scripts.[10]
