Moghadam is also a trustee of Stanford University,[5] board member of the Urban Land Institute,[6] and past chairman of the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT).[7]

Early life and education

Hamid Moghadam was born in 1956 in Tehran, Iran.[10] In 1973, he entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).[10] At MIT, Moghadam received Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in engineering.[10][11] In 1980, Moghadam received a MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.[12][13]

Career

After college, Moghadam planned to return to his native Iran.[14] Moghadam’s plans were abruptly derailed by the Iranian Revolution in 1979.[15]

In 1983, Moghadam and Douglas Abbey founded Abbey, Moghadam & Company.[13][14] They were joined by T. Robert Burke in 1984 and established AMB Institutional Realty Advisors, later named AMB Property Corp.[13] Initially, they planned to provide investment advisory services, but the company quickly “morphed into a workout business” that helped investors revitalize underperforming real estate assets.[14] In the late 1980s, AMB refined its investment strategy and focused on industrial parks and neighborhood shopping centers in infill trade areas.[14]

In 1997, Moghadam guided AMB, in conjunction with certain of its funds under management, through an IPO.[16] Starting in 1999, AMB sold nearly $1 billion in retail assets to institutional investors and reallocated funds into warehouse spaces.[17][18] In 2002, AMB launched an international expansion program focused on Mexico, Europe and Asia.[19] In 2011, Moghadam orchestrated a “merger of equals” of AMB and ProLogis, another real estate investment trust, to create Prologis, the largest industrial real estate company in the world, with more than $50 billion in assets under management and a platform of logistics and distribution facilities on four continents.[2][3]

Moghadam is currently chairman and chief executive officer at San Francisco, CA-based Prologis.[20] Prologis operates nearly 3,000 logistics and distribution facilities for 4,700 customers across a diverse range of industries in the Americas, Asia and Europe.[21] The company’s platform totals 574 million square feet that is owned, managed or under development.[22] Prologis operates as publicly traded real estate investment trust (REIT)[23] and is a member of the S&P 500.[4]

Corporate responsibility

Under Moghadam’s leadership, Prologis has received numerous honors for its commitment to corporate responsibility and has been named among the “Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World” for six consecutive years.[21][24][25][26][27] Focus areas include environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and ethics & governance.[28] Programs that support these goals are detailed in Prologis’ 2012 Corporate Responsibility Report: Making a Positive Impact Across a Global Platform.[29]

Industry leadership

Moghadam is a trustee of Urban Land Institute and has served on the executive committee of its board of directors since 2011.[6] He previously served as the chairman of National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT)[7] and the Real Estate Investment Trust Political Action Committee,[30] was a director of Plum Creek Timber Company,[31] and is a founding member of The Real Estate Roundtable.[32]

Moghadam frequently appears on major television networks, including CNBC,[33] Bloomberg TV, and Fox Business Network, as a real estate industry expert.[34]

In 2007, he received a Lifetime of Building Award from the Commercial Real Estate Development Association (NAIOP).[35] He is a past recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor from the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations Foundations, Inc. (NECO).[36] In 2004 and 2005, Moghadam was presented Industry Leadership Awards by the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT).[37][38]
