Arachu Castro

Arachu Castro is a medical anthropologist. She is the Samuel Z. Stone Chair of Public Health in Latin America and the Director of the Collaborative Group for Health Equity in Latin America at Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.[1][2] Prior to her work at Tulane, she was at Harvard Medical School as an Associate Professor. She has worked as a consultant for WHO, UNICEF, UNAIDS, the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank, among others and sits on the Board of Directors of Medical Education Cooperation with Cuba (MEDICC). [3]

Her area of focus is on health policy as it relates to maternal health and HIV intervention in both the Caribbean and Latin America. In 2007 she founded The Latin America and Caribbean Initiative for the Integration of Prenatal Care with the Testing and Treatment of HIV and Syphilis (ILAP) in collaboration with a number of health organizations. She is also the co-editor of Unhealthy Health Policy: A critical Anthropological Examination with Merrill Singer.

Education

She received her Ph.D. in social anthropology and ethnology from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris in 1996 and a Ph.D. in social sciences and health from the University of Barcelona in 1997. She also has a MPH from Harvard School of Public Health.[4]
