Founded in 1816, Mt. Zion UMC is the oldest <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_American" class="extiw" title="en:African American">African American</a> congregation in Washington, D.C. Until the passage of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thirteenth_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution" class="extiw" title="en:Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution">Thirteenth Amendment</a> to the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Constitution" class="extiw" title="en:United States Constitution">United States Constitution</a> in 1865, Mt. Zion was a stop on the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underground_Railroad" class="extiw" title="en:Underground Railroad">Underground Railroad</a> for runaway <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery_in_the_United_States" class="extiw" title="en:Slavery in the United States">slaves</a>. Construction of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothic_Revival_architecture" class="extiw" title="en:Gothic Revival architecture">Gothic Revival</a> church was completed in 1884.

Mt. Zion UMC was listed on the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Places" class="extiw" title="en:National Register of Historic Places">National Register of Historic Places</a> in 1975; in addition, the building is designated as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contributing_property" class="extiw" title="en:Contributing property">contributing property</a> to the Georgetown Historic District, listed as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Historic_Landmark" class="extiw" title="en:National Historic Landmark">National Historic Landmark</a> in 1967.
