Aidan Walsh (born 23 January 1990) is an Irish hurler and Gaelic footballer who plays as a midfielder for the Cork senior teams.[1]
Born in Kanturk, County Cork, Walsh first excelled at Gaelic games during his schooling at Coláiste Treasa. He arrived on the inter-county scene when he first linked up with the Cork minor teams as a dual player, before later joining both the under-21 sides. He made his senior football debut during the 2009 championship before joining the senior hurling team for the 2014 National Hurling League.[2][3] Since then Walsh has won one All-Ireland medal, two Munster medals and two National League medals in football, as well as one Munster medal in hurling. He has been an All-Ireland runner-up on one occasion.
Walsh has also been a member of the Munster inter-provincial team, however, he has yet to claim a Railway Cup medal. At club level he has won several championship medals with Kanturk, while he also lined out with the Cork Institute of Technology.
As a member of the Ireland international rules football team, Walsh has won two International Rules medals, the second as vice-captain of the team.
Playing career
Club
In 2011 Walsh was a key member of the Kanturk junior football team that reached the final of the county championship. Mitchelstown provided the opposition, however, Kanturk had a facile 1–20 to 0–4 victory, giving Walsh a coveted championship medal.[4]
Two years later Walsh lined out with the Kanturk hurlers as the team reached the intermediate championship decider. Éire Óg were the opponents, however, Kanturk had a relatively comfortable 2–22 to 1–12 victory, with Walsh contributing 1–1.[5]
Inter-county
Walsh first came to prominence with Cork as a dual minor in 2007. He won a Munster medal with the footballers that year, as old rivals Kerry were defeated by 1–16 to 2–8.[6]
In 2008 Walsh enjoyed provincial success with the Cork minor hurling team. A narrow 0–19 to 0–18 defeat of Tipperary gave Walsh a Munster medal in that code.[7]
Walsh won his first All Ireland Senior Championship medal in 2010 as Cork defeated Down by 0–16 to 0–15 in the final.[8]
In October 2010, Walsh won his first All Star award being named in midfield.[9] He also claimed the 2010 Young Footballer of the Year award.[10]
He also played Underage with Cork in football & hurling. He won a Munster Minor Hurling Championship medal in 2008, Cork's first title in the grade since 2006. In 2007 he won a Munster Championship with the Cork minor football team.
He then moved on the Under 21 sides of both. In football he was part of the Cork side that won the 2009 All Ireland title, in 2011 he was captain of the Cork team that won the Munster Championship and later lost out to Galway in the All Ireland semi-final. In hurling he was part of the Cork team that made it to the Munster Final but lost out after extra time to Limerick, Walsh scored an impressive 8 points from play in the game.
At club level with Kanturk he has enjoyed some success. He won a Duhallow Junior A Football Championship with them in 2009 and again in 2011. He also held helped Kanturk to a Cork Junior Football Championship in 2011. In 2013 he won a Cork Intermediate Hurling Championship after losing the 2012 final.
In 2011, he helped the Cork Institute of Technology hurling team to their first county final where they played Carrigtwohill. Despite being favourites for the game Carrigtwohill ran out 0–15 to 1–11 winners. Then the GAA barred Walsh, as well as goalkeeper Michael Boyle, from playing for DCU in controversial circumstances.[11][12][13]
