Casting
Kate Jenkinson has wanted a role in Wentworth since she had started watching the show while sick with the flu.[2] Jenkinson recalled that when her agent called saying there was a job in Wentworth, she replied "well it's mine".[2]
It was also said "Playing a character so “damaged and broken and colourful” is a responsibility Jenkinson takes seriously."[2] While it was also mentioned that Jenkinson visited women's outreach centers talking to women who'd gone through similar experiences.[2]
Characterization
The SoHo Wentworth website character profile for Allie stated, "Allie was once a drug addicted street prostitute who suffered abuse by her clients and her pimp failed to protect her. Kaz found her and insisted on taking her under her wing. Fiercely independent, Allie had no interest in being saved by anyone but she was interested in the violent retribution the Red Right Hand was enacting. As a gay woman, Allie found solace being with women and emotional respite from a lifestyle she couldn’t escape.
Kaz let Allie live with her and together they attacked the various Johns who had assaulted Allie over the years. Having somewhere to sleep every night and a purpose during the day, helped ease Allie’s drug dependency. She owes Kaz a lot and now the crew has been apprehended and doing time in Wentworth, she is firmly in Kaz’s camp and her loyal compatriot. This isn’t Allie’s first time around the block. She did time behind bars ten years ago for assault so she’s not flustered and she injects a warm and disarming wit into the mix, even though it was inside she developed the drug addiction that threatened to control her."[1]
Jenkinson stated "What really attracted me to her as a person and character was this endless positivity and optimistic outlook on life. Perhaps that comes from having experienced the worst that life has to offer. She has the attitude that things can only get better."[3]
It was also billed that Allie was "an ice-addicted prostitute with a warm and engaging wit."[3]
Storylines
Season Four
Allie is introduced as she comes to Bea Smith (Danielle Cormack) telling her that Kaz wants to meet her. Allie is informed by Maxine Conway (Socratis Otto) that if Kaz wants to meet it is under Bea's terms. Later in the episode, Allie witnesses Maxine beating up another prisoner under Bea's orders. When in the showers, Allie checks out Bea's body which causes a fight where Maxine bashes another inmates head against a wall causing it to bleed.[4]
Allie is involved in the nude riot which is organized by Kaz when Vera won't agree to the conjugal visits. Allie later comes to Bea in the library where Bea is teaching hairdressing looking her hair done.[5]
Allie witnesses Ferguson's (Pamela Rabe) arrival into the general population with Kaz. Allie is also witness to all the verbal abuse Ferguson is receiving. Allie overhears Boomer (Katrina Milosevic) talking about the conjugal visits being banned and Boomer talking about how she can't get herself off, Allie gives Boomer tips on how to make it more pleasurable where she seemed to be Bea and Liz (Celia Ireland) uncomfortable. Allie comes back later to apologize to Bea if she made her uncomfortable with her talking earlier. Allie then tells Bea about her time when she was a prostitute and how finding the right person made sex better. During their conversation, Allie comments about how Bea's face looked like Judge Judy's when she was talking to Boomer earlier.[6]
Reception
Elaine Atwell for AfterEllen discussed Allie in her recap of First Blood by saying "Kaz’s second-in-command, a rather comely blonde I have taken to calling "Opposite-of-Vinegar-Tits"...",[7] in the same episode recap Atwell stated "So it is wrong, very wrong, how much I enjoyed this scene, right?" when she was talking about the shower scene between Allie and Bea.[8]
A writer for The Bit Bag claims that Wentworth is "is really packing in heat with Allie and Bea" when discussing the shower fight scene.[9]
Danielle Cormack who plays Bea, stated 'Kate Jenkinson as Annie Novak is just gorgeous and brings this great heart to the show.'[10]
In a later episode's recap, Atwell stated "Allie is a vigilante who is at worst a violent transphobe" when discussing what was already known about Allie.[11]
