Berserk (Japanese: ベルセルク Hepburn: Beruseruku?) is an upcoming 2016 anime television series based on Kentaro Miura's Berserk manga and a sequel to the Golden Age Arc film trilogy. This will be the second television adaptation of the manga, after the 1997 anime of the same name, and will cover the events of the original "Black Swordsman" arc not seen in that adaptation. It will premiere on 1 July 2016.

Plot

The story will follow Guts as the "Black Swordsman", an appearance which was briefly glimpsed in the first episode of the 1997 television series and briefly seen in the final scene of Golden Age Arc films.[3]

Guts was once a wandering mercenary taken in by the mercenary group known as the Band of the Hawk (鷹の団 Taka no Dan?) and fought alongside them before their leader Griffith sacrificed his followers to become one of the God Hand to fulfill his dream of a kingdom of his own. Only Guts and his lover Casca, who lost her sanity from the horrors she saw and endured, escaped the "Eclipse" ritual though both are branded with marks that attract fell entities like restless spirits to them. Leaving Casca in the care of the blacksmith Godo, Erica and Rickert, the only member of the Hawks not sacrificed, Guts began to hunt down the God Hand's Apostles to find and kill Griffith. Years passed, and Guts is joined in his hunt by the elf Puck as events are starting to unfold.

Production

A new Berserk anime was announced in December 2015 in Hakusensha's Young Animal magazine,[3][5] with a short preview trailer released at Comiket later the same month.[6][1] The anime's website announced in February 2016 that the project would be a television series.[7] A second trailer was streamed in March 2016.[8][9]

Kentaro Miura, the author of the original manga, will serve as executive supervisor for the anime.[10] The series will be directed by Shin Itagaki and written by Makoto Fukami and Takashi Yamashita. The character designs will be provided by Hisashi Abe. Animation studio Liden Films and NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan is producing the series in collaboration with GEMBA, Millepensee.[4][2] Shirō Sagisu will return from the Berserk: The Golden Age Arc films to compose the music for the series, while Susumu Hirasawa, composer for the 1997 series and the Golden Age Arc films, will return to produce an insert song for the series, titled "Hai yo" (灰よ?, lit. "Oh Ashes").[4][8] The opening theme song will be performed by 9mm Parabellum Bullet.[8]

The primary voice cast will reprise their roles from the Golden Age Arc film trilogy.[2]

Broadcast and release

The 24-episode series[11] will premiere on 1 July 2016 on WOWOW,[7][12] and later on MBS's Animeism programming block,[7] TBS, CBC and BS-TBS.[13]

The series will be simulcast on Crunchyroll.[14][15]
