Overview

A video game that relies on blockchain technology for a decentralized experience is known as a blockchain game or blockchain gaming. [1]

Blockchain-based games normally have the following benefits:

  • Serverless (decentralized game worlds)
  • Secure item ownership (cryptographically secured)
  • Fraud-proof payment system

History

The world's first blockchain game, Huntercoin,[2][3] was released in February, 2014.[2] It runs entirely on its blockchain without servers. In the game, players earn HUC by competing against each other, which they can trade for Bitcoin.[4]

One of the best known examples of a blockchain collectible game is Cryptokitties, launched in November 2017.[5] The game made headlines in December 2017 when a cryptokitty character sold for US$100,000.[6] Cryptokitties illustrated scalability problems for games on Ethereum when it created significant congestion on the Ethereum network with about 30% of all Ethereum transactions being for the game.[7]
