Brunete (Spanish pronunciation: [bɾuˈnete]) is a town located on the outskirts of Madrid, Spain with a population of 10,100 people.[1]

History

The Battle of Brunete was fought in the area during the Spanish Civil War. The battle ended in a stalemate but was seen as a tactical victory for the Spanish Nationalist Forces[citation needed].

Spanish dictator Francisco Franco, a keen huntsman,[2] conducted shooting trips in the town during his period of leadership.[citation needed]

In early June 2013, the McCann advertising agency won the 'Silver Sun' in the Latin American Festival of Advertising Communication after an innovative campaign that the agency completed free-of-charge in Brunete. The campaign responded to a public dog excrement problem, and involved a remote control device that would chase after offending pet owners[3] and a system that would result in the excrement being mailed to the homes of the offending pet owners. Initial results show that the amount of dog faeces in the town has reduced by 70 per cent.[4]

Geography

The town is located 27.35 kilometres (16.99 mi) from the centre of Madrid.[5]
