Callum Paterson (born 13 October 1994)[2] is a Scottish professional footballer who plays for Hearts in the Scottish Premiership, as a right back but has also played as a striker.[3]

Club career

Paterson began his career as a youth player at Tynecastle[4] before joining Heart of Midlothian in 2010.[5][6] A member of the club's Under-20 side[7] he was promoted to the first team during pre-season in the summer of 2012 and made his first team debut on 14 July, in a friendly against Raith Rovers where he scored the first goal of the game.[8] Having impressed during these pre-season fixtures,[9] on 4 August he made his Scottish Premier League (SPL) debut aged 17, in a 2–0 win over St Johnstone.[10] He made his European debut on 23 August, in a 1–0 defeat to Liverpool at Tynecastle.[11] On 31 August, Paterson signed a new contract extending his stay with the club until 2015.[12] On 22 September 2012, he scored his first two Career goals[13] in a 3–0 win over Dundee Utd in the SPL.[14] On 22 January 2013,[15] Paterson suffered ligament damage to his foot[16] in training that ruled him out of the Scottish League Cup Semi-final against Inverness that weekend.[17] The injury required surgery and ultimately ruled him out for the remainder of the season.[18] During his debut season Paterson made twenty seven appearances, scoring four times[19] In doing so he played as a right-back, midfielder and as a striker,[20][21] with the latter being the position he played in before joining Hearts.[22]

On 11 August 2013, Paterson scored his first goal of the 2013–14 campaign, when he headed home the only goal in the Edinburgh derby against Hibernian at Tynecastle.[23] On 27 April 2014, Paterson scored a brace against city rivals Hibernian in a 2–1 win. A week later he scored again in a 5–0 win over Kilmarnock and also scored three days later against Partick Thistle.

International career

Paterson earned caps at both under-18 and under-19 level in 2012 before establishing himself as a regular in Scotland under-21 squads.

On 10 November 2014, manager Gordon Strachan called Paterson into the senior Scottish squad for the first time after Phil Bardsley pulled out of the squad injured, ahead of a European qualifier against the Republic of Ireland and a friendly against England.[24]

He made a debut in Scotland national team on 29 May 2016 in a 0–1 lost friendly match against Italy.
