Christian Petracca (born 4 January 1996) is an Australian rules footballer playing for the Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL).
Junior career
In addition to being a standout junior footballer, Petracca also had a notable junior basketball career. He was selected for the Australian Under 18 Championship team alongside future NBA player Dante Exum.[1] Due to a desire to remain in Australia and be close to family and friends, Petracca eventually decided to focus on football rather than basketball. He played his junior football for the Beverley Hills JFC and then went to play for the Eastern Ranges in the TAC Cup and eventually became a star player. A solid performance for the Ranges in the 2013 TAC Cup preliminary final, where he kicked 5 goals and 5 behinds, as well as taking 9 contested marks, put a notice out to recruiters of his imposing attitude.[2] He was taken at pick 2 in the 2014 AFL Draft by Melbourne.
AFL career
After a serious knee reconstruction denied Petracca the chance to play a game in 2015, he was given the news of a debut for round 6, 2016. He made his debut in the 39-point loss against St Kilda at Etihad Stadium.[3]
Petracca was named the Rising Star nominee for round 9 following a 21 disposal and seven tackle performance against the Brisbane Lions at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.[4]
