A coffee house church is a community of Christians who gather in a coffee house for Bible study, praise and worship services, prayer circles, or even for a Catholic Mass. The theology is a very simple assertion that Church is about the community gathered, and not about the building it is in. For marginalized Christians who do not feel welcome in buildings with pews, high ceilings, and stained glass, it is a perfect way for people to re-enter the Christian spirituality without the religious baggage. People in this movement do not see themselves as more authentic than "normal" Christians, but as an equal attention of the greater Church.

For Eucharistic communities, a Mass in a coffee house offers a setting which more closely imitates the mood of the Last Supper.
