Dhaka Polytechnic Institute (Bengali: ঢাকা পলিটেকনিক ইন্সটিটিউট) or DPI is a Government Technical Institute in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is the largest Polytechnic Institute in Bangladesh.[citation needed]

History

In early 1955, Ford Foundation established Dhaka Polytechnic Institute, with a duration of 3 years long courses, based on the syllabus of Oklahoma State University, Still Water, USA. The certificate issued by the then Technical Board Education was "Associated in Engineering" having provision to undergo B.S course in USA and also in U.K. Its formation and academic course history details goes back to the birth of Ahsanullah Engineering College, which is now known as BUET.

Since 2000–01 it has offered a four-year-long Diploma in Engineering course which is controlled by Bangladesh Technical Education Board (BTEB).

Directorates

The institute operates under the executive control of the Ministry of Education(MOE) acting through the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE).[1] The academic programmes, curriculams are maintained under the regulation of the Bangladesh Technical Education Board (BTEB).[2] BTEB function under Directorate of Inspection and Audit (DIA), which in turn function under Chief Accounts Office (CAO), and it function under MOE.

Grading system

The academic year consists of eight semesters. Academic courses are based on a credit system. The grading system:

Library

DPI library has a collection of 20,000 books and 10,000+ bound periodicals. Besides, 37 titles are in the current subscription list of journals. The main reading room of central library can accommodate 100 students at a time to provide reading facilities of rare and out of print books, ready reference and prescribed textbooks.

Undergraduate

Only about 1030 students get admitted. However,Diploma programs candidates are required to appear in interviews and/or written tests.
