Diana E. Murphy, (born January 4, 1934) is a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.[1]
Education
Murphy received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Minnesota in 1954 and her Juris Doctor from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1974,[2] where she was an editor on the Law Review.
Career
Murphy was nominated to that post by President Bill Clinton in 1994 and confirmed by the Senate.[2] Prior to being elevated to the Court of Appeals she was a federal district judge for the District of Minnesota from 1979 to 1994, serving as chief judge from 1992 to 1994.[2] While on the Court of Appeals she also served as Chair of the United States Sentencing Commission from 1999 to 2004.[2]
Murphy is the first woman to serve on the Eighth Circuit.[3] In 1993 she was reportedly considered for the post of Attorney General of the United States, which later went to Janet Reno.
