Doug Altenberger is a college basketball analyst and former college basketball player. He played college basketball at Illinois.
Biography
One of Illinois’ best groups arrived on campus for the 1982-83 season. Guards Bruce Douglas and Altenberger, and forwards Scott Meents and Efrem Winters joined sophomores George Montgomery and Anthony Welch to form the nucleus for a team that would win 95 games during the next four seasons and make the tournament every year.
Altenberger won the team's MVP award during the 1984–85 campaign.[1] Five games into the 1985–86 season, Altenberger decided to redshirt due to an injury. Sources conflict on whether it stemmed from an injury to a knee[2][3] or to the back.[4] Altenberger received honorable mentions to the All-Big Ten Team in 1984, 1985 and 1987. In his Illinois career, he tallied 1,271 points.[2]
Altenberger was a defensive-minded, sharpshooting guard.[4] During his senior season in 1986–87, Altenberger served as a captain of the team and set a school mark with 76 three-pointers made (since broken).

After college
Altenberger was selected by the Chicago Bulls as the 125th overall pick in the sixth round of the 1987 NBA draft. He played with the Bulls during the 1987 NBA preseason, but did not make the regular season roster.[5]
Altenberger has worked at a bank, and as a college basketball analyst for ESPN Plus and the Big Ten Network. He often works Illinois men's basketball games.[2]
