The Gobineau Society (German: Gobineau-Vereinigung) was an association founded in 1894 at Freiburg to honor Arthur de Gobineau's name and revive his theories both in France and in Germany.

History

The Society was created by Ludwig Schemann and a number of noted members of the Bayreuth circle. The French branch received little support and never really flourished. It was not initially popular in Germany either, but there it received the wholehearted support of the Count of Sandels, the Grand Duke of Hesse, the Grand Duchess of Oldenburg and the Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, among many influential authors, artists and academics. The Gobineau Society's publications appeared as a supplement to the Bayreuther Blätter. The Society also reprinted in French and carefully translated into German the major works of Gobineau.

Arrigo Boito, Diane de Guldencrone, Max Müller, Alfred Bovet, José Vianna da Motta, Rudolf Götze, and several other European notabilities were either patrons or sponsors of the Society.
