Jagtar Singh Hawara (Punjabi: ਜਗਤਾਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਹਵਾਰਾ) is the current interim Jathedar of Sri Akaal Takht Sahib, the highest Sikh religious seat.[1] He is a member of Babbar Khalsa. He is convicted in the assassination of then Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, who was killed by a human bomb in Chandigarh, on August 31, 1995. During his tenure, the powerful Punjab Police were rumord to be involved in brutality against numerous Sikhs.
He is a Punjabi Sikh and belongs to Hawara village in Fatehgarh Sahib.[2] He is one of the main culprits in the assassination of the Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh.[3] He was accused of the murder of a Granthi (Sikh Priest) of Sri Muktsar Sahib at the age of 15 but was later acquitted.[4][5] Hawara came back into limelight, in 2004, when he escaped from maximum security jail at Burail, along with 2 other Sikh prisoners by digging a 90 feet tunnel with his bare hands[6]
On November 10, 2015, Jagtar Singh was appointed as the interim Jathedar of the Sri Akaal Takht by the Sarbat Khalsa. He replaces Giani Gurbachan Singh.[1] Jagtar Singh Hawara is the 35th Jathedar of Sri Akaal Takht.
