  1. In Early New Persian there are two long vowels "ē" and "ī" which are both shown by the Perso-Arabic letter "ی". Their distinction is lost in western varieties of Persian (spoken in Iran), but more or less preserved in eastern varieties (spoken in Afghanistan and Central Asia).
