The Journal of Urban History is a peer-reviewed academic journal that publishes papers in the field of urban studies. The editor-in-chief is David R. Goldfield (University of North Carolina at Charlotte). It was established in 1974 and is currently published by SAGE Publications in association with the Urban History Association.

History

The Journal of Urban History published its first issue in November of 1974. Raymond A. Mohl served as the Journal's first editor from the inaugural issue until the position was passed on to Blaine Brownwell in 1977.[1] Mohl, Brownwell, and current editor David Goldfield formed the Journal in response to the rapid developming field of urban studies. Mohl's first editorial noted that the Journal would necessarily encompass a variety of subjects, methodologies, and interpretations of urbanity since the emerging field of urban history was, as an editor described it, a "big tent." [2]

The Journal today is still characterized by the diversity of ideas represented in its articles, review essays, and special sections.[3] Rather than more typical one book reviews, the Journal is known for its historiographical review essays that consider several titles in relation to one another and the field at large.[4] Issues are published in January, March, May, July, September, and November. The Journal is distributed internationally and, as it has from the outset, strives to present scholarly work from around the globe.[5]
