Julio Julián Castillo Valdez (born June 3, 1956) is a former infielder in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Boston Red Sox.

MLB career

Valdez played mainly as a shortstop from 1980 through 1983 for the Boston Red Sox. He was also used as a second baseman and designated hitter by the Red Sox. Listed at 6' 2", 160 lb., he was a switch-hitter and threw right-handed. In 65 games over four seasons with the Red Sox, Valdez hit .207 (18-for-87) with two doubles, three stolen bases. with one home run and eight RBIs.[1]

Legal troubles

On May 6, 1983 Valdez was arrested by Boston police while in the dugout during a game. He was charged with statutory rape.[2] The charges were dismissed in July of that year after a grand jury refused to return an indictment.[3]

Final years in the minors

Following his arrest, Valdez was suspended with pay by the Red Sox and later designated for assignment.[3] He played for Boston's Double-A and Triple-A baseball affiliates through the end of 1984. From 1985 through 1988, he played at multiple levels of minor league baseball for the Chicago Cubs organization.[1]
