The KTM Komuter Northern Sector (Malay: KTM Komuter Sektor Utara) is one of the four KTM Komuter services run by Malaysian rail operator Keretapi Tanah Melayu. The service was introduced on 11 September 2015 following the completion of the Ipoh-Padang Besar Electrification and Double-Tracking Project in December 2014.

The initial service runs between Gurun in Kedah, Butterworth in Penang and Kamunting in Perak.[1][2][3][4] On 1 January 2016, a second service was launched between Butterworth and Padang Besar in Perlis. With the introduction of this service, the KTM ETS that ran between these stations was scrapped.[5][6]

On 17 January 2016, the routes were completely revamped with the initial Kamunting-Butterworth-Gurun service being replaced with two routes: the Butterworth-Kamunting route and the Butterworth-Gurun route. These were in addition to the Butterworth-Padang Besar route which had been introduced on 1 January 2016.[7]

Lines and stations

Since 17 January 2016, the KTM Komuter Northern Section consists of three routes:

The section of tracks between Butterworth and Bukit Mertajam, with the Bukit Tengah Station between the two, are common stations for all three lines, while all stations for the Butterworth-Gurun route are also stations for the Butterworth-Padang Besar route.
