Liberapay is "a non-profit organization founded in 2015 in France"[2][3] providing a platform to donate money to teams, organizations and individuals. The service does not charge a fee on donations aside from that required by its payment processors, instead financing its own activity through donations handled by the service itself in the same way as donations to third-parties are handled.[2][4]

History
Liberapay began as a European fork of the now-defunct US-based platform Gratipay, which had undergone changes after facing legal issues.[5] Initially Liberapay's only currency was the Euro, but support for the US dollar was added after Gratipay announced that it would shut down.[6]
Liberapay shares similarities with the for-profit platform Patreon, but it does not allow creators to reward their patrons like Patreon does. This difference in the nature of the transactions has tax implications, for example Patreon collects VAT on all payments made from inside the European Union[7] whereas Liberapay does not[8].
Censorship
In 2016, Liberapay's payment processor, Mangopay, forced them to terminate the account of National Action.[9]<templatestyles src="Template:Blockquote/styles.css" />
The Liberapay cofounder [Charly C.] explained "The Liberapay service is neutral, our terms have no provisions that prevent specific groups of people from using our service, we allow anyone until a law or contract requires us not to. The Liberapay organization does not associate with any views, Nazis or otherwise. However I can tell you that its members' personal views, while quite diverse, do not include anti-Semitism."
Earlier today, Mangopay, a well-known Luxembourg-based financial technology company that currently handles payment processing for Liberapay.com, made clear his [sic] company would not be providing its services for National Action.
"We will ask them to stop processing this donation through our solution right away", said Romain Mazeries, the General Manager of Mangopay.[10]
In July 2018, Mangopay abrubtly terminated their contract with Liberapay, [11] disrupting its services. According to Liberapay, one of the points of contention was that Liberapay was "open to everyone."

Mangopay hasn’t provided a detailed explanation of their decision, so we’re not sure. We’ve tried to understand their concerns, they seemed related to the fact that Liberapay is open to everyone, so we proposed to review every user and block any potentially problematic account, but they rejected this proposal, saying that it’s too late for that. To be clear, Mangopay never warned us that something was wrong and that they would terminate our contract if we didn’t right that wrong. We also didn’t expect them to end the contract so abruptly without following the normal procedure that would have given us until the end of the year to migrate elsewhere.
In August 2018, Liberapay started processing payments through Stripe.[12]
