MTA Regional Bus Operations bus fleet

The MTA Regional Bus Operations bus fleet comprises over 5,700 buses in fixed-route service in New York City under MTA New York City Bus (New York City Transit) (including Select Bus Service) and MTA Bus.

A roster of the fleet is shown below. Not included below are buses and vans not open to the general public (Access-A-Ride vans and taxicabs, and employee shuttle buses), or demonstration buses. This list also does not include buses formerly operated by MTA Long Island Bus that are now operated under contract to Nassau County by Veolia Transportation.

    • All buses were originally operated under New York City Bus.
    • 8924-9073 were delivered brand new to Atlanta, Georgia for the 1996 Summer Olympics bus system before being delivered to MTA.
  • 9250-9349 were originally delivered with coach type seating mounted on elevated interior platforms for express service. 9250 & 9273 retain their platforms but had their coach seats replaced with 2x2 seating.
  • 9140-9149 were powered with Cummins M11E engines and are retired.
  • Being retired, 108 units remain in service.
    • 8797 was converted into a Metrocard Bus and renumbered to 0017.
    • 9207 became NYPD unit 982796.

  • 9656 caught fire shortly after delivery and was subsequently retired. The next RTS order (see below) included a replacement 9656, but the replacement was wrecked in an accident in 2008.

    • All buses were originally operated under New York City Bus.
    • 5175-5199 are assigned to Eastchester Bus Depot.
  • This order included a replacement bus for the original 9656 (see above) in addition to the 350 RTS buses ordered, but the replacement was totaled in a major accident in 2008.
  • 5075 originally had a ZF Ecomat-2 5HP592C transmission but later received an Allison transmission.
  • Several buses are receiving LED signs.
  • 7 units were retired and written off due to separate accidents, fires, and structural problems.

    • 31 renumbered units are active. The renumbered units are: 1001-1002, 1004-1009, 1011-1017, 1019-1021, 1023-1027 (ex-5252 and several ex-5300s/5400s), 4705 (ex-5283), 4800-4806 (ex-5392, 5400, 5410, 5423, 5416, 5415, 5418, respectively)
    • 4 un-renumbered units (5464, 5471, 5485, and 5491) are also active.
    • 4705 is a 1999 unit, and 1002 is a 2001 unit.

    • This unit was briefly loaned to the SEPTA as demonstrator bus 3999 in the spring of 2005.[3]
  • As delivered, buses had Hawker XT sealed lead-acid batteries; 6401-6402, 6468, 6485 are retrofitted with A123 lithium-ion batteries.

  • Operated under New York City Bus and MTA Bus.
    • All units were originally operated under New York City Bus.
    • 5510-5519, 5536, 5539-5542, 5556-5560, 5568, 5603-5604, 5645, 5648-5649, 5677-5678, 5687, and 5712 were transferred to John F. Kennedy Depot and are operated by MTA Bus on the Q10.
  • Last order of high-floor transit buses for the MTA.
  • 5656 and 5658 were involved in separate accidents. The front half of 5658 and the rear half of 5656 were joined together to form a new 5656, while the damaged sections were scrapped.
  • 5615 and 5657 were retired due to damage from separate incidents.

  • 4020-4028 are equipped with luggage racks for the Q70 Limited airport bus service.

  • 570-643 were originally to be built by Daimler Buses North America (Orion) before Orion (winding down operations) transferred the order to New Flyer.[7][8]
    • 644-672 buses were later added to the end of the order via an agreed upon option order.
  • 205 is the 4000th CNG bus built By New Flyer.
  • 631 and 636 are equipped with LED headlights.
  • Model discontinued after this order (and old-styled New Flyer buses ever built).
