Malachi Kirby (born 20 September, 1989[2]) is an English actor known for his roles in EastEnders and Doctor Who.[3] He was born in London and grew up in Battersea. His parents have Jamaican ancestry. His father died when Kirby was 6, and his mother is a government worker. Because he was shy, at 14 years-old, his mother signed him up for classes at the Battersea Arts Center. Later, Kirby studied acting at the Identity School founded by actor, Femi Oguns.[4]
Kirby stars as Kunta Kinte in the 2016 version of Roots portraying the lead character.[5][6] His performance has been well received by critics.[7][8]
Kirby was shortlisted for the ‘Outstanding Newcomer’ accolade at the 2011 Evening Standard Theatre Awards.[9]
In March 2016, Kirby was confirmed to be starring in an episode of the anthology series Black Mirror directed by Jakob Verbruggen entitled "Men Against Fire".[10]
