Mayfield Senior School is an independent Catholic college preparatory school, founded in 1931 for young women grades 9-12. It is sponsored by the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, a member of the Holy Child Network of Schools and is guided by the educational philosophy of the Society's foundress, Cornelia Connelly.

Mayfield is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The total enrollment is about 320, with a 1:8 faculty/student ratio, an average class size of 16 and is 52% ethnically diverse. The school located at 500 Bellefontaine Street in Pasadena, California, USA in the historic Arroyo Seco. It is known as a school that provides an excellent academic education while offering nine Conservatory of the Arts programs and 23 competitive teams in 12 sports. Mayfield's faculty and administration are deeply committed to teaching to the whole child while ensuring the emotional and spiritual development of each student.

History

Mayfield School was founded in 1931 by the Society of the Holy Child Jesus at the invitation of John Joseph Cantwell, then the Bishop of Los Angeles-San Diego (as the Archdiocese of Los Angeles was then known as). In 1950, the school split into Senior and Junior Schools due to space constraints and zoning regulations. The Junior School (K - 8) remains on the original Euclid Avenue campus while the Senior School (high school) moved to its current location on Bellefontaine Street. The Senior School remains girls-only while the Junior School became coeducational after the split.

Academics

Offering 21 AP classes, students who graduate from Mayfield Senior School are well-prepared for future study at a variety of universities, as 100% of its graduates are accepted to colleges and universities. Students take classes in eight different subject areas: English, Fine Arts, World Languages, Mathematics, Physical Education, Religious Studies, Science, and Social Studies. Graduation requirements include:

- 4 years of English
- 4 years of Religious Studies
- 3 years of Mathematics
- 3 years same World Language OR 2 years each of two different World Languages
- 3 years of Social Studies
- 2 years of Laboratory Science
- 2 years of Physical Education (1 year mandatory for freshmen, the other may be completed with athletics programs)

Admissions

Admission to Mayfield is highly competitive, with the school receiving four applications to every one student admitted. Students enrolled at Mayfield Senior School represent 71 diverse elementary and middle feeder schools.

Interesting facts

The campus is situated on what was once a private residence. Due to the school's stunning architecture, film crews occasionally shoot commercials, television shows and movies in the "house" portion of campus.

Mayfield has had multiple students selected to the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Queen and Court, three of whom have been Rose Court Queens. Ann Marie Colborn '84 was the first Mayfield student to reign over the world famous Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade as Rose Queen in 1984. Tannis Ann Turrentine '92, was the 74th Rose Queen and reigned over the 103rd Tournament of Roses Parade in 1992. Nancy Grace '96 was one of the six rose princesses to reign with the Rose Queen in the 107th Rose Parade. Jennifer Propper '05 was a rose princess in the 116th Rose Parade. Vanessa Manjarrez '13 reigned over the 124th Tournament of Roses Parade in 2013. Most recently, Bergen Onufer '15 was named to the Royal Court as a princess on October 6, 2014 for the 126th Tournament of Roses Parade.

Mayfield's Mascot is the cub, Maisy.
