Motor Toon Grand Prix (モータートゥーン・グランプリ?) is a racing video game developed and published by Sony Computer Entertainment of Japan (SCEJ). It was released for the PlayStation in Japan on December 16, 1994.[1] The game is commonly confused with Motor Toon Grand Prix 2 which was released under the title Motor Toon Grand Prix in North America since the first game never left Japan.[2]
Development
Motor Toon Grand Prix was developed in-house at SCEJ (making it Sony Computer Entertainment's first major in-house project for the PlayStation[3]) and began production under the title "Poly Poly Circuit GP".[4] The project was directed by Kazunori Yamauchi, who stated that it was the team's goal to create realistic driving simulation without distracting from the game's enjoyment. "Basically we're not trying to fake reality – I'd rather create the sensation of handling a remote control car but with the kind of dynamics that you'd expect from a real car," Yamauchi stated. "The cars' suspensions actually work – we've attempted to simulate the dynamic forces as they go around corners."[4] Yamauchi's development group within SCEJ later formed Polyphony Digital, the company behind the realistic racing series Gran Turismo.[5] The character designs in Motor Toon Grand Prix were done by Japanese artist Susumu Matsushita.[4]
Reception
On release, Famicom Tsūshin scored the game a 27 out of 40.[6]
