Nguyễn Hữu Hạnh served in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam, rising to the rank of Brigadier General. His first son Second Lieutenant Nguyen Huu Tai, born in 1948, was killed in a raid on Chau Thanh district, Tien Giang province.

Hanh assisted South Vietnam President Dương Văn Minh in the announcement that there would be a transfer of power to the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam.
