Nomadin (2003) is a fantasy novel written by Shawn P. Cormier, that centers around a young boy who is a student of magic. The book details his adventures upon finding himself out of the learning environment, and deep in the heart of a world that he does not understand.

Plot

Young Ilien Woodhill knows nothing of the dark tales told around late-night fires, or of the legendary Nomadin Wizards and the prophecy that haunts them. But all that is soon to change. For a shadow touches the peaceful land of Nadae. An ancient evil is stirring. Already a NiDemon has crossed from the land of the dead. And now Ilien must run - from a monster of unimaginable cunning and power, toward a fate more frightening than that which hunts him. But he cannot run forever. Eventually he will have to make a stand. Sooner or later he will have to face what even the legendary Nomadin cannot ... himself.

Characters

Ilien Woodhill
is the novel's young protagonist. At twelve years old, he is rather small for his age. He has never known his father, who left when he was very young. He lives with his mother in the small, rural town of Southford. His biggest worry are the two bullies, Stan and Peaty, who wage a relentless battle to break his spirit and steal his magical pencil. Things change when the old man, Gallund, comes to stay at the house. Gallund is a wandering professor of language, but the nouns and verbs he teaches Ilien can do more than just hurt someone's feelings. They can kill. Gallund is a wizard, and secretly begins to teach Ilien magic.
Gallund
Gallund is a Nomadin Wizard and he teaches Ilien many important lessons in magic. The Nomadin are celestial beings who can take any form they choose and are tasked with keeping the Laws of Creation. Along the way, Gallund teaches Ilien the ways of the creatures in Nadae. He always sees things in a different way, teaching him that things are not always what they seem.
The Swan
The Swan is a massive, talking swan who lives in the Drowsy Wood and can see the possible future. She knows Ilien's true heritage and is tasked with watching him from afar.
