"Padam Padam" is a song by Australian singer Kylie Minogue, taken from her upcoming sixteenth studio album Tension. It was released as the album's lead single on 18 May 2023 by BMG Rights Management and Minogue's company, Darenote.[4] It was written by Norwegian singer and songwriter Ina Wroldsen together with its producer Lostboy.[5] The accompanying music video, which was shot in Los Angeles, California, was directed by Sophie Muller, and released the same day as the song.[6]

"Padam Padam" reached number one in Israel, the top five in Croatia, and the top 10 in Ireland and the United Kingdom, giving Minogue a top 10 single in five consecutive decades from the 1980s to the 2020s in the latter two countries. Elsewhere, the song reached the top 20 in Australia, charting also in the Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, Hungary, Russia, and Poland, as well as on component charts in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, Germany, Guatemala, New Zealand, and the United States. Minogue performed the single on American Idol and at KTUphoria in the US and at the Capital's Summertime Ball 2023 in the UK.

Background

The song was announced alongside the album announcement on 12 May 2023 but had no release date at the time.[7] The release date was announced on 15 May, along with a 20-second preview of the song.[4] The song's title is onomatopoeia for a heartbeat.[5]

Composition

"Padam Padam" has been described as a "hypnotic electro",[3] "sleek, thumping, catchy-as-hell dance-pop jam".[1] According to George Griffiths of the Official Charts Company, "Padam Padam" is "elastic, Eastern Europe-inspired electro pop with a bite".[8]

Musically, the song is in 4/4 time and is built on a Phrygian dominant scale of C (a Mixolydian scale with a lowered 9th (2nd) and lowered 13th (6th)), a scale used for its tense quality.[9][10]

Reception

Writing for Stereogum, Tom Breihan described "Padam Padam" as "a sleek, thumping, catchy-as-hell dance-pop jam", adding that "Kylie knows exactly how to deliver a song like that".[1] Describing it as "infectious", Retropop magazine also called the song "a punchy electronic extravaganza that promises to be 'in your head all weekend'", citing a lyric from the song.[11] Hollie Geraghty from NME called out its "thumping earworm refrain".[12] Similarly, writing for Stereoboard, Jon Stickler said "the catchy pop banger" has a "an infectious chorus".[13]

Mary Varvaris of The Music highlighted the song's "fresh and vibrant dance sound". She wrote that the song "sounds completely 2023 while still remaining unmistakably Kylie".[6] The Guardian writer Owen Myers described the song as "shiny bubble of dance-pop joy", which "is unburdened by the personal narrative of its performer, freeing Minogue up to play sunny showgirl once more".[14]

Impact

The term "Padam-ic" was coined by Laura Snapes of The Guardian to encapsulate the cultural impact of "Padam Padam", describing it as the "cultural moment in which frivolity and lightness seem to be breezing back after the pandemic and after an era in which culture has been taken very seriously".[15]

The song has been described as Minogue's biggest hit since music streaming came predominantly into the discography, being likened to the ability of Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, and Dusty Springfield to have a recording comeback after commercially less profitable periods.[16] Other critics have observed that it is a rare occurrence for a middle-aged artist to have achieved a mediatic impact in the last decades.[17][18][19][20]

In an interview for Variety, James Masterton, a chart analyst, and historian says the success of the single is significant because Minogue has "bridged a generation gap with a hit record that is reaching out both to her loyal (and ageing) acolytes but also a new generation of music fans", the latter attracted thanks to the TikTok platform that "contributed to the explosion of Kylie's single; [...] bypassing all traditional media avenues".[21]

It also became an anthem for LGBT community in several Pride parades,[22][23] including the NYC Pride March,[24] Pride in London,[21] and the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.[20] The song was also recognized as the Record of the Year at the Las Culturistas Culture Award.[25][26] The song was also added by William, Prince of Wales and Catherine, Princess of Wales, to announce their participation at the London Pride.[27]

Commercial performance

"Padam Padam" debuted at number 39 on the ARIA Singles Chart, making it Minogue's first top forty single in Australia since "Timebomb" in 2012.[28] It later peaked at number 19.[29] In Ireland, the single became Minogue's highest-charting single since "Higher" with Taio Cruz in 2011,[30] peaking at number seven on the Irish Singles Chart.[31] In New Zealand, the song peaked at number 11 on their component Hot Singles chart in May 2023.[32] It re-entered at number 28 two months later, Minogue's first single to last more than a week in that country since "Higher" in 2013.[33]

In United Kingdom, the song entered at number eight on both the Singles Downloads Chart and Singles Sales Chart a day after its release, and later peaked at number one.[34][35][36] On the main Singles Chart (which comprises sales and streaming figures), the song debuted at number 26, becoming Minogue's 52nd Top 40 single in the country and her highest-charting single since "Into the Blue".[8][37] The song continued to steadily rise before peaking at number eight in its fifth week on the chart,[38] making the song Minogue's first UK Top 10 single since "Higher" in February 2011 and her 35th overall.[39] To date, "Padam Padam" has spent four non-consecutive weeks inside the Top 10.[40]

In the United States, "Padam Padam" became Minogue's first top-10 single on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Songs chart since that chart was founded in 2013.[41] By early August 2023, "Padam Padam" had reached number one on the US Dance Radio Airplay chart, her second number one single after "Red Blooded Woman" in 2004.[42] In Canada, "Padam Padam" debuted at number 98 on the Canadian Hot 100, making it Minogue's first single to chart in Canada since "Timebomb" in 2012.[43]

Released on 18 May 2023,[6] the music video was directed by Sophie Muller and filmed in April that year at the Pink Motel, a former working motel now used for film and TV shoots, in Sun Valley in Los Angeles.[44][45][46]

Inspired by the works of David Lynch and Nicolas Roeg's The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976),[47] the music video depicts Minogue as "a vampiric femme fatale in a candy-coloured Americana dreamland", according to Phoebe Luckhurst in The Australian.[44] Minogue appears in a roadside diner and a junkyard wearing several striking red outfits, including a custom Mugler catsuit with a cape,[48] flanked by dancers also dressed in red.[5]

Describing the aesthetic, Muller said the music video portrayed "a sense of otherworldliness, a strangeness" which mirrored the track, adding: "There's something unusual about [the song], a darkness and unease."[44] Rather than shoot the video in a studio, Minogue said she wanted to film on location in the United States.[47]

Live performances

In May 2023, Minogue performed "Padam Padam" for the first time during the Season 21 finale of American Idol in a medley with "Can't Get You Out of My Head"; for the latter, she was joined by Nutsa, one of the contestants.[49]

In June 2023, Minogue gave a previously unannounced performance as the surprise guest at Capital's Summertime Ball at Wembley Stadium in London, which marked the debut performance of "Padam Padam" in the United Kingdom. During the appearance, she also performed "Can't Get You Out of My Head".[50][51]

Minogue returned to the US in June 2023, headlining at iHeartMedia 103.5 KTU's KTUphoria 2023 at the Jones Beach Theater in New York. During the appearance, she performed "Padam Padam" as part of a set list with nine other songs.[52] She also sang parts of the song during an interview to Andy Cohen's radio programe at SiriusXM Studios, as part of the American promotion of the single, singing in both her own voice and mimicking Siri's, Apple Inc.'s virtual assistant.[53][54] There was also a live performance at New York City's LGBTQ+ club Horse Meat Disco, where, at the beginning of song, there were sound issues, so Minogue asked for the audience to sing along it with her for a second time.[55]
