A male Northern Cardinal State bird: Cardinal Indiana is the 19th U.S. state and is located in the Midwest region of the United States of America. With over six million residents, it is ranked 15th in population and 17th in population density. It is 38th in land area. Indiana is bounded on the north by Lake Michigan and the state of Michigan; on the east by Ohio; on the south by Kentucky, with which it shares the Ohio River as a border; and on the west by Illinois. Indiana is one of the Great Lakes states. As of 2006, Indiana has an estimated population of 6,313,520, which is an increase of 47,501, or 0.8%, from the prior year and an increase of 233,003, or 3.8%, since the year 2000. The total gross state product in 2005 was US$214 billion in 2000 chained dollars. Indiana's per capita income, as of 2005, was US$31,150. The Calumet region of northwest Indiana is the largest steel producing area in the U.S. Indiana is a diverse state with a few large urban areas and a number of smaller industrial cities. It is best known for the Indianapolis 500 American automobile race, held annually over the Memorial Day weekend, and a strong basketball tradition, often called Hoosier Hysteria. Residents of Indiana are called Hoosiers. The state's name means "Land of the Indians" and Angel Mounds State Historic Site, one of the best preserved prehistoric Native American sites in the United States, can be found in southern Indiana. More about Indiana... The Amish (Amisch or Amische, /ˈɑːmɪʃ/) are an Anabaptist Christian denomination, formed in 1693 by Swiss Mennonites led by Jacob Amman. They live in the United States and Canada and are divided into several major groups. The Old Order Amish use horses for farming and transportation, dress in a traditional manner, and forbid electricity or telephones in the home. Church members do not join the military, apply for Social Security benefits, take out insurance or accept any form of financial assistance from the government. Beachy Amish and New Order Amish groups have fewer restrictions; some permit cars and electricity, and members may be difficult to distinguish from the general North American population, whom they refer to as "English". There are Old Order communities in 21 states; Ohio has the largest population (55,000), followed by Pennsylvania (39,000) and Indiana (37,000). The largest Amish settlements are in Holmes County, Ohio, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and LaGrange, Indiana. He served as Governor of Indiana in the American Civil War, and was a stalwart ally of President Abraham Lincoln. During the war, Morton suppressed the Democrat-controlled Indiana General Assembly. He exceeded his constitutional authority by calling out the militia without approval, and during the period of legislative suppression he privately financed the state government through unapproved federal and private loans. He was criticized for arresting and detaining political enemies and suspected southern sympathizers, but is remembered as one of Indiana's most successful governors who led the state during its most challenging period. Terre Haute is a city in Vigo County, Indiana near the state's western border with Illinois. It is the principal city of and is included in the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 59,614. The city is the county seat of Vigo County. Its current Mayor is Kevin D. Burke. Terre Haute is home to Indiana State University, a public university with a student population just over 11,000. The private engineering school Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is located just east of the city, and is consistently rated one of the top engineering schools in the nation.
