Ottawa (ⁱ/ˈɒtəwə/ or /ˈɒtəwɑː/) is the capital of Canada, a municipality and the second largest city within the Province of Ontario. Located in the Ottawa Valley in the eastern portion of Southern Ontario, the city lies on the southern banks of the Ottawa River, a major waterway forming the local boundary between the Provinces of Ontario and Quebec.

Connected by several bridges to its Quebec neighbour, the city of Gatineau on the northern shores of the Ottawa River, the two cities and surrounding areas are designated the National Capital Region (NCR). Though governed by separate municipal governments, the federal lands within the region are administered by the National Capital Commission (NCC), a federal crown corporation charged with the responsibility of planning and managing the federal government's interests in the NCR.

Ottawa is situated on the south bank of the Ottawa River, and contains the mouths of the Rideau River and Rideau Canal. The oldest part of the city (including what remains of Bytown) is known as Lower Town, and occupies an area between the canal and the rivers. Across the canal to the west lies Centretown (often just called "downtown"), which is the city's financial and commercial hub. Situated between Centretown and the Ottawa River, the slight elevation of Parliament Hill is home to many of the capital's landmark government buildings, including the Peace Tower, and the legislative seat of Canada. As of June 29, 2007, the Rideau Canal, which stretches 202 km (126 mi) to Kingston, Fort Henry and four Martello towers in the Kingston area was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Ottawa Electric Railway Company was a streetcar public transit system in the city of Ottawa, Canada which operated between 1891 and 1959. Ottawa once had tracks through downtown on Rideau Street, Sparks Street, and others and extended outside of the downtown core to provide services which helped form communities such as Westboro, Old Ottawa South and The Glebe. Prior to this, starting in 1866, public transportation had been provided by Ottawa City Passenger Railway Company, a horse-drawn tram service. Today Ottawa employs a bus rapid transport and light rail (LRT) service provided by OC Transpo, in operation since 1973.

In May 1885, electric lighting commenced in the city. In 1908, Ahearn & Soper, (with Erskine Bronson) was consolidated as Ottawa Heat, Light and Power. O.E.L. had been purchased by the city in 1905 for $200,000, forming the core of the Municipal Electric Department, and then Ottawa Hydro.

Barbara-Ann Scott, OC, O.Ont (born May 9, 1928 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) is a Canadian retired figure skater. She is the 1948 Olympic Champion. Barbara began skating at a very young age with the Minto Skating Club of Ottawa. She was only eleven years old when she won her first Canadian national junior title. Two years later, in 1942, the thirteen-year-old became the first female to ever land a double lutz in competition.

During her 40s she was rated among the top equestrians in North American. She remained active in skating by volunteering her time as a figure skating judge. She has been awarded with many honours and accolades, including being made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1991 and a member of the Order of Ontario in 2009 for her contributions to sports and for charitable works.
