Richard Paolinelli (born April 2, 1964.[1]) is an American author and former sports journalist. He is best known for his 2017 Dragon Award-nominated science fiction novel, Escaping Infinity [2], and his Jack Del Rio political-thriller series. He has written multiple novels and short-stories across several genres. He has also authored two non-fiction historical sports books.
He started out as a freelance writer/photographer in 1983 before becoming a full-time newspaper writer in 1991. He worked at several newspapers between 1991 through 2011. He was a co-host of The Writer’s Block on LA Talk Radio between 2017-2022.
He currently writes for InsideTheStar [1]</ref>) – a website dedicated to coverage of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys – and has a Substack – Dispatches From A SciFi Scribe.
In 2018, he teamed up with James Christina and formed a small publishing house, Tuscany Bay Books [2]</ref>). Following Christina’s death in 2022, he became the sole publisher.

Early life and early career
Paolinelli was born in Turlock, California. His father’s drilling business had his family moving all across the western United States [3]. He is of Italian descent. He started writing as a freelancer in 1983 for local and regional publications in West Texas [4]. In 1985 he joined Elite Comics as the lead writer for Seadragon and is credited as the story writer in the first two issues [5]. He continued to work as a freelance writer and photographer through 1991 [6].
Paolinelli started his newspaper career in 1991 with the Gallup (NM) Independent [7]before going to the Modesto (CA) Bee [8], Gustine (CA) Press-Standard [9], Turlock (CA) Journal – where he won the 2001 Best Sports Story, in the annual California Newspaper Publishers Association’s Better Newspapers Contest [10]. He then moved to the Merced (CA) Sun-Star [11], Tracy (CA) Press [12], Patch [13] and finished his career in 2011 with the San Francisco (CA) Examiner [14]. In 2007 he covered the U.S. Womens National Hockey Championships in San Jose, CA for Red Line Editorial [15], [16], [17], [18], [19], [20].

Fiction
- After retiring from newspaper writing, Paolinelli began writing fiction again [21], and started researching for his two historical sports non-fiction books.
- Since then he has written and published nine novels, two non-fiction books and has written nearly two dozen short stories/novellas. He has also written a series of Star Trek fan fiction stories that are available for free online.
- In 2017 his friend and fellow author, Gibson Michaels, died suddenly in his home in Houston, Texas. At the time, Gibson was nearly finished writing his fourth novel, Eerie. At the family’s request, Richard completed the novel and it was released four years to the day of Gibson’s death by Artistic Origins. To this day, Richard refuses to let anyone know what chapters in the novel were written by him and which are Gibson’s.
- In 2018 he founded The Helicon Society [22]. A collective of science fiction and fantasy creators devoted to the Superversive philosophy of story-telling. He also founded the annual Helicon Awards in 2019. [23]
- In 2022 his novel, Reservations, was optioned and put into development by Step By Step Pictures. [24]
Book Publisher
- In 2018, he teamed up with fellow author James Christina to form a small publishing house, Tuscany Bay Books. At the time, he published under his own imprint, Tuscany Bay Publishing, while Christina published under Black Dog Publishing. When they joined, they kept the Tuscany Bay name, but on the company logo placed the initials, BDP, on the Moon in tribute to Christina’s imprint. [25]

- He is currently a staff writer at InsideTheStar.com [26], a site devoted to news about the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. He began writing for the site in March 2023.

Radio Show Host
- He was a co-host for the weekly LA Talk Radio show, The Writer’s Block [28], with Jim Christina and Bobbi Jean Bell from 2016 until the show left the air in June 2022 following Christina’s death.

Paolinelli currently resides in Western Colorado with his wife, Cheryl.
