Sandboxie is a sandbox-based isolation program developed by Invincea (which acquired it from the original author Ronen Tzur[1][6][7]), for 32- and 64-bit Windows NT-based operating systems.[8][9][10] It creates a sandbox-like isolated operating environment in which applications can be run or installed without permanently modifying the local or mapped drive.[8][11] An isolated virtual environment allows controlled testing of untrusted programs and web surfing.[11][12][13]
History
- Version 3.36 added partial 32-bit Windows 7 compatibility, for build 7000.
- Version 3.38 adds additional Windows 7 support, for build 7100.
- Version 3.40 adds full support for Windows 7, as well as security improvements and minor fixes.
- Version 3.42 improves on Windows 7 support, adds new settings, and improves compatibility with 3rd party software.
- Version 3.46 addresses over 100 issues, including improvements to Win 7 64-bit support.
- Version 3.48 introduces a new activation process to Sandboxie, to combat the copyright infringement of Sandboxie registration codes. A Product Key replaces the previous registration code, and Sandboxie must now be activated every 180 days online or offline. Otherwise it falls back to the limited unregistered mode.
- Version 3.50 adds additional compatibility settings, bug fixes, and improvements to the GUI.
- Version 3.54 makes some necessary changes for SP1 on Win 7, as well as a recent Windows Update for XP.
- Version 3.74 becomes the latest version, superseding the beta version 3.81.xx
- Version 3.76 is a maintenance release which fixes a security problem.
- Version 4.02 added full support for Windows 8,[14] and removed support for Windows 2000 and pre-SP3 Windows XP.
- Version 4.04 offers full protection to 32- and 64-bit Windows, and removes support for Windows 2000 and pre-SP3 Windows XP. July 8, 2013
- Version 4.06 adds initial support for Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2003, and improved support for Windows 8.
- Version 4.08 adds bugfixes and improvements.
- Version 4.10 adds DEP and ASLR for all Sandboxie binaries, support for Windows 8.1 update KB2919355, and some bugfixes.
- In December, 2013 Invincea announced the acquisition of Sandboxie.[1] The original developer Ronen Tzur further announced he will no longer be involved with the program.[6][7]
- Version 4.12 (May 2014) moved the MS Visual C++ redistributable libraries into a separate download, fixed auto-updating, and some minor bugfixes.
- Version 4.14 (Oct 2014) includes a number of bugfixes including issues that caused crashes with Chrome and Silverlight as well as some major memory leaks. It also plugged a non-security issue the DarkComet malware made visible.
- Version 4.16 (Feb 2015) includes a major redesign of the hooking/injecting code, enables 65-bit ASLR, moves the MS Visual C++ libraries back into the installer (they were moved out in 4.12), fixed a security hole that allowed hard links to be created outside the sandbox, and some bugfixes.
- Version 4.18 (May 2015)
- Version 4.20 (June 2015)
- Version 5.04 (Sept 2015) adds support for Windows 10.
- Version 5.06 includes numerous bugfixes.
- Version 5.08 includes support for Office 2013 in Windows 10, bug fixes and application startup improvements.
- Version 5.10 includes bugfixes in Windows 10 and uses dual-signed (SHA1 and SHA256) certificates to eliminate IE 11 and Windows 10 certificate warnings.
64-bit Windows
As of version 4.02, Sandboxie has full support for 64-bit versions of Windows[15] with the exception of Windows XP 64-bit which was never supported.[16]
License
Sandboxie is released under a proprietary End-User License Agreement (EULA). Home users may continue using Sandboxie for free, without paying to register it; however, two of its functions remain disabled: automatically running programs under Sandboxie, and the simultaneous use of multiple sandboxes.[3][13] After 30 days, Sandboxie starts with a registration nagware message that the user can dismiss after a 5-second delay.[8]
Reception
Sandboxie was included in Brothersoft's 2010 Editors Pick list.[17]
Gizmo's Freeware gave Sandboxie a rating of 9 out of 10 stars[18] and included it in their Editors' Choice List as the "Best Free Browser Protection Utility".[19]
Softonic has given Sandboxie a rating of 8 out of 10 with Elena Santos stating in her review that "Sandboxie is a handy tool to test untrustworthy software without putting your system in danger."[20]
