The Cathedral of the Holy and Righteous Warrior Feodor Ushakov
The Cathedral of the Holy and Righteous Warrior Feodor Ushakov (Russian: Кафедральный собор праведного воина Феодора Ушакова ) is the major orthodox cathedral in Saransk of the Saransk and Mordovia eparchy.
History
In 1991 by the decision of The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church the Saransk and Mordovia eparchy parted from the Penza eparchy. The first cathedral of the new administration was named after St. John the Evangelist. It turned out to be too small to serve as a main cathedral. Due to this fact Metropolitan Varsonofiy of Saransk and Mordovia addressed to the authorities of The Republic of Mordovia for the permission to start the construction of a new Cathedral. In 2001 The Russian Orthodox Church canonized Fyodor Ushakov and he became the patron saint of the Cathedral. The construction finished in the year of 2006. On the 6 August the Cathedral was blessed by Patriarch of Moscow and Russia Alexy II.[citation needed]
Architecture
The cathedral was created in cross-in-square form in empire style with the hemispherical Byzantine dome. There are four bell-towers which contain 12 bells that were cast using ancient technologies in Tutayev, in Yaroslavl Oblast. The biggest bell weighs 6 tons. At the ground floor there is baptistry, a refectory, a sacristy, Sunday school classes and a library.[1]
