Tiago José Pinto Machado (born 18 October 1985) is a Portuguese professional road racing cyclist. Machado currently rides for UCI ProTeam Team Katusha–Alpecin.[1]
Machado left RadioShack–Leopard at the end of the 2013 season and joined NetApp–Endura for the 2014 season.[2]
Career
2014
After spending 4 seasons with RadioShack-Nissan, Tiago moved on to Team NetApp-Endura before the start of the 2014 season. Following a successful start of the season, which saw him winning the overall classification of Tour of Slovenia, his first Category 2.1 overall win, Machado started Le Tour de France for the first time in his career. Machado had a strong start on Le Tour and managed to reach 3rd Overall after 9 Stages. On the 10th stage of Le Tour, on July 14, Tiago crashed badly in a descend 96 km away from the finishing line, sliding down the road for about 100 meters. After being checked by the doctors and when he was expected to abandon the race, he ordered his team to give him back his bicycle, climbed 3 mountains and arrived to the finishing line last, 43 minutes behind the day's winner, Vincenzo Nibali. He was sutured after the stage. Despite arriving outside the time control, the commissaries allowed Machado to continue on the race due to the extraordinary effort made by the Portuguese rider. French newspaper L'Equipe described Machado's effort as "heroic".[3]
Machado left Team NetApp-Endura after the 2014 campaign to go to Team Katusha on a two-year contract.[1]
