Launched in 2009, Tokopedia is now one of Indonesia’s biggest online marketplace. Tokopedia provides a customer to customer (C2C) retail by providing a platform for individual entrepreneurs and small/medium businesses to open online stores. Tokopedia has been offering basic transactional features for free from launch until at least the end of 2015.

History

PT Tokopedia was founded by William Tanuwijaya and Leontinus Alpha Edison on February 6, 2009. The company manages Tokopedia.com, which was launched to public on August 17.

Investments

PT Tokopedia received initial seed funding from PT Indonusa Dwitama in 2009 for IDR 2.5 billion. In the following years, Tokopedia attracted capital injections from global venture capitals including East Ventures (2010), CyberAgent Ventures (2011), NetPrice (2012), and SoftBank Ventures Korea (2013). In October 2014, Tokopedia managed to make history as the first technology company in Southeast Asia to receive a US$100 million investment (around IDR 1.2 trillion) from Sequoia Capital and SoftBank Internet and Media Inc (SIMI).[1] In April 2016, Tokopedia has raised another $147 Million in its latest financial round[2]

Awards

PT Tokopedia was awarded as Marketeers of the Year 2014 for e-commerce sector at the Markplus Conference 2015 which held by Markplus Inc. on December 11, 2014.[3]

Transactions

As of April 2015, Tokopedia.com claims to have more than 4.9 million active product listings, facilitating sales of more than 5 million products every month.[4]

Payment System

Tokopedia.com uses escrow as the payment system. In this case, Tokopedia.com act as the third party which mediate transactions between sellers and buyers in order to minimize online fraud. Until early 2015, there are 5 payment methods that can be used for transaction in Tokopedia.com, including Tokopedia Balance (Saldo Tokopedia), bank transfer, and instant payments methods such as Mandiri ClickPay, Mandiri E-Cash, and BCA KlikPay. In the end of 2015, Tokopedia has 11 million transactions.

Brand Ambassador

On November 12, 2014, Tokopedia.com officially announced Chelsea Islan as its brand ambassador.[5]

On October 21, 2015, Tokopedia confirmed that Isyana Sarasvati replace Islan as their new brand ambassador.[6]
