Ukrnafta is a Ukrainian oil and natural gas extracting company, the largest producer of oil and gas in the country.[1] In 2006, the company conducted some 91% of oil, 27% of natural-gas condensate and 17% of gas extraction in the country.

The company produces around 3 million tonnes of oil and 4 billion m3 of natural gas per year, having proven oil reserves of nearly 180 million tonnes. Ukrnafta also owns three natural gas processing plants.

Background

The company was established in 1994 through privatization of the "Ukrnafta producing association" state enterprise that existed since 1945. Its initial predecessor was Ukrnaftcombinat. Ukrnafta is a Ukrainian portmanteau word that is a combination of words Ukrainian and Oil.

Just over 50% of the company is owned by the state company Naftogaz Ukrainy, 42% of the company belongs to the Privat Group based in Dnipropetrovsk. Together with Chornomornaftogaz and Ukragazproduction they are the only state companies involved in extraction and refining of gas and oil.

Composition

In Kiev the company owns two different research centers and administration of automatic systems. There also is a scientific research and project institute in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. Near Poltava Ukrnafta has its military assigned unit.

Other areas

The company distributes its oil products through some 391 petrol stations. Ukrnafta also owns the football club FC Naftovyk Okhtyrka.
