Phon Thong (Thai: โพนทอง) is a district (amphoe) in the northern part of Roi Et Province, Thailand.

Geography

Neighboring districts are (from the east clockwise) Moei Wadi, Nong Phok, Selaphum, Pho Chai of Roi Et Province, Kuchinarai of Kalasin Province.

History

The district was created on November 23, 1919, consisting of two tambon from Selaphum district, two from Kamalasai and two from Kuchinarai. Another tambon was taken from the district Din Daeng, which was abolished at the same day, the other 6 tambon from Din Daeng were assigned to Saeng Badan district.[1]

In 1939 the district was well as the main tambon were renamed to Waeng,[2] the district name was changed back to Phon Thong in 1953.[3]

Administration

The district is subdivided into 14 subdistricts (tambon), which are further subdivided into 190 villages (muban). Phon Thong is a subdistrict municipality (thesaban tambon) which covers parts of tambon Waeng and Sa Nokkaeo. There are further 14 Tambon administrative organizations (TAO).
