The 3 arrondissements of the Allier department are:

  1. Arrondissement of Montluçon, (subprefecture: Montluçon) with 106 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 123,162 in 1990, and was 117,852 in 1999, a decrease of 4.31%.
  2. Arrondissement of Moulins, (prefecture of the Allier department: Moulins) with 111 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 110,475 in 1990, and was 106,705 in 1999, a decrease of 3.41%.
  3. Arrondissement of Vichy, (subprefecture: Vichy) with 103 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 124,073 in 1990, and was 120,164 in 1999, a decrease of 3.15%.

History

At the creation of arrondissements, in 1800, there were four arrondissements in the Allier. In 1926, the arrondissement of Gannat was suppressed. In 1942, the capital of the arrondissement of Lapalisse was transferred to Vichy, then capital of the French State.
