Garage rock is a genre of rock music that is characterized by exuberance and energy coupled with unsophisticated songwriting and musicianship; the reference is to the preferred practice venue for young bands. Lenny Kaye coined the term punk rock to refer to the mid-1960s American bands that formed in the wake of the British invasion - The Seeds, Blues Magoos, Electric Prunes, etc. - which were featured on his seminal Nuggets collection (released in 1972). Since this term has come to refer to other forms of music in the years that followed, the term garage rock is now generally utilized to refer to this form of music. Besides punk rock, garage rock also has similarities to psychedelic rock.
