Hayate (疾風 Hayate?; born July 3, year unknown) is a fictional Japanese character from the Dead or Alive video game series. He made his debut in Dead or Alive 2 as Ein (which means "one" in German), an amnesiac karate master, and then made his debut as the ninja Hayate in Dead or Alive 3. Since his debut, Hayate is considered to be one of the best characters in the DOA series, as well as one of the more beginner-friendly characters, despite also having one of the most difficult moves in the entire series, the Raijin combo throw (introduced in Dead or Alive 4).

Hayate/Ein's sole Japanese voice actor since DOA2 has been Hikaru Midorikawa, who also voices Marth in the Fire Emblem video game series from Nintendo. In English, he has been voiced by Yuri Lowenthal since Dead or Alive: Dimensions. Lowenthal has also voiced Marth in English. Previously, Ein was voiced by Jeremy Hou in Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore.

Before Dead or Alive

Hayate was a ninja in the Mugen Tenshin ninja clan. He had a happy childhood with both his sister Kasumi and stepsister Ayane, who both love him very much. He is also a good friend of Ryu Hayabusa. One day, the expelled ninja Raidou, who is also Ayane's biological father, attacks the Mugen Tenshin village in an attempt to steal the Torn Sky Blast ninpō attack. Raidou defeated Ayane and then challenged Hayate to single combat. Hayate was overcome by Raidou's superior fighting ability, and had the Torn Sky Blast stolen from him in the process. As both of their ninpō attacks collided, the resulting explosion threw Hayate into a tree, cracking his spine and sending him into a coma. Kasumi looks after him while he is in a coma, but she soon departs the village, taking Hayate's sword with her (thus deeming her a traitor) in order to seek revenge against the one who harmed her beloved brother.

Dead or Alive

During the first Dead or Alive tournament, Hayate had been captured by DOATEC and made into a superhuman. This was done by mind control and some genetic engineering via Project Epsilon. The leader of DOATEC at that time was Fame Douglas, whose organization wanted to create an ultimate superhuman. Hayate was not a participant in Dead or Alive, but he had a major role in the motives of some of the others.

Dead or Alive 2

Ein in DOA 2

After the first tournament and the end of Project Epsilon, Hayate was left in the Black Forest of Germany and was in a state of temporary memory loss. He could not remember his name and went by the name of Ein (which means "one" in German). He studied karate under Hitomi's father, and soon mastered it. After that, he joined the second DOA tournament to find answers to his lost past. He was defeated by Ryu Hayabusa, who would later win the second tournament by killing the evil Tengu. After his defeat, Hayate's memories slowly began to return to him. Before they did, however, he faced both Kasumi and Ayane.

Ein is one of the three characters who appear on the front cover of the western Dreamcast versions of DOA2; the other two being Kasumi and Tina Armstrong. His standard tag mate is Ayane, but he can be just as strong when teamed up with Kasumi. He also works well with Ryu Hayabusa and Jann Lee, as well as Hitomi in DOA2 Ultimate.

Dead or Alive 3

Hayate returns in Dead or Alive 3 with his memory regained and as leader of the Mugen Tenshin style. His reason for joining the tournament this time is to defeat DOATEC's next superhuman creation Omega, who was Ayane's foster father until he was turned to evil. Some of his new moves are similar to Kasumi's; this was done on purpose to show their connection with the same fighting style and the same ninja village where they came from. He also knows some old moves from his karate experience. Although he felt it was his duty to defeat Genra as leader of the shinobi, Hayate was beaten by Ayane. Ayane proceeded to the final round and killed her foster father Genra, citing that it was a personal affair.

Dead or Alive 4

With Genra out of the way, Hayate now goes on a quest for revenge against DOATEC for what they did to him. He joins forces with Ayane, his step sister, and Ryu Hayabusa, a friend of his, to take down the corrupt organization, as well as its new creation, Alpha-152 (a clone of Kasumi). During the fighting in DOATEC's Tritower complex Hayate comes across La Mariposa. There's more to this female wrestler than it seems as she appears to have some info on Project Epsilon and may have been responsible for Hayate's memory loss. He also later confronts and fights Bayman, who is also looking to kill Victor Donovan, the game's main antagonist (and the man who runs DOATEC behind the scenes).

Meanwhile Hitomi is looking for Hayate (or rather Ein) to help her rebuild her father's dojo. Hayate agrees to come with Hitomi if she can defeat him in combat.

At the end of DOA4, Hayate and his ninja comrades destroy the Tritower complex and escapes the building as it burns to the ground, Hayate actually kills few of DOATEC's army, he is seen jumping from different cars and vans and uses his bow to set the DOATEC zeppelin on fire, while Kasumi battles Alpha-152. It is unclear, however, if this is the last of DOATEC after this major blow to their organization. Despite this, however, DOATEC restructures itself and disbands its military division under its president Helena Douglas, while Victor Donovan forms a new organization, MIST, with Christie, Lisa, Miyako (Kokoro's mother), and his son Rig (introduced in DOA5) as his operatives.

Dead or Alive 5

In Dead or Alive 5, Hayate, along with Ayane, Kasumi and Ryu Hayabusa, once again attempts to stop Donovan and his new organization MIST, which was formed after Helena Douglas restructured DOATEC after Zack saved her life in the ending of DOA4. MIST itself had effectively existed within DOATEC prior to the Mugen Tenshin attack in DOA4. Towards the end of the game, Hayate is captured and subjected to the Epsilon Project, but is saved by Kasumi and Ayane. They then defeat clones of themselves, and attempt to take down the Kasumi clone Phase 4. At the end of the story, Helena thanks the trio for their work. Kasumi and Ayane also resolve their highly bitter feud.

Personality

Hayate has a powerful sense of duty when it comes to his role as the leader of his clan. He is so devoted to the clan's rules and traditions that he hunts down his own sister. He also feels that it is his duty as the clan leader to defeat Genra in Dead or Alive 3.

Hayate was close with his sister Kasumi throughout their childhood, and thus does not attempt to kill or capture her over the course of Dead or Alive 3. He has also developed a special bond with his stepsister, Ayane. He has always played the role of her protector, even though she is an illegitimate member of the family.

Movie Appearance

Hayate is portrayed by Collin Chou in DOA: Dead or Alive. In the movie he is captured by DOATEC but isn't subject to experiments. He is simply used as a guinea pig to test Donovan's newest invention. He is also the reason for Kasumi's entrance in the tournament like in DOA1. Hayate and Ayane are shown as lovers and are in no way related. The fighting style he used was Eagle Claw.

Gameplay

Ein

Being the predescesor to Hitomi, Ein is a medium-damage strike character with excellent high-position combos (F, Y or Tsubauchi). He's best played from an aggressive standpoint, where he can position himself close to the enemy. However, a weakness shared between the two is the slight "wind-up" timeframe needed prior to the execution of attacks. In DOA2, he is considered one of the best characters in the game, alongside the likes of Ryu Hayabusa, Kasumi, Ayane, Gen Fu and Jann Lee. He is also generally considered a strong character in DOA3, however in DOA4 and DOA5 he is considered a lower tier character as his attacks are extremely prone to being countered.

Hayate

Hayate can best be described as a merge between the play-styles of Hitomi and Kasumi. He now features a somersault kick similar to his ninja counterparts (Maizuru), however his throws have been slightly reduced in power. Many of his attacks have extremely fast start-up and inflict decent amounts of damage. Despite all this, it should be noted that one move in particular, "Raijin", is known as the hardest command throw in DOA4, DOA5 and DOA6 in terms of execution, mostly as a result of strict timing in the third part of the command. It should also be noted that "Raijin" is not the most powerful throw in DOA4, DOA5 or DOA6, despite its complexity, but can be very damaging. He is consistently listed as one of the best characters in every game since his first appearance in DOA3, making him at least top-tier and is a known favorite amongst the ninja characters of the series. He is an extremely popular character and is often used in the online mode.

Notes

As a bonus, Team Ninja has put Ein into DOA3 and DOA4 (and later DOA5 for its update, Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate), with his DOA2 moveset, as an extra character who can be unlocked. Ein is unlocked in DOA3 by beating Story Mode with all the characters, getting a high score on Survival Mode using Hayate and typing in the initials as "EIN". The only difference from his DOA2 appearance is that he now wears a longer black trench coat, the same type of coat Tomonobu Itagaki sometimes wears, and has a new Matrix look. It has been said that he is Itagaki's favorite male character. It is possible that he modeled the character after himself (seeing that they share a resemblance).

In DOA4, he is unlocked by simply completing Story Mode with Hitomi (the trenchcoat costume is now absent however).

Hayate's standard tag mate is Ayane, but he can be just as strong when teamed up with Ryu Hayabusa. Ein's default tag partner in DOA2 is Ayane, while his default tag partner in DOA3 is Kasumi. Though his default tag partner in DOA4 is Kokoro, the two do not have any unique tag throws or an intro or outro. He also works well with Jann Lee and Hitomi. Ein is also Tengu's default tag partner in DOA2 (Leifang is Tengu's default tag partner in DOA4). In Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate and DOA5 Last Round both Ein and Hayate also work well with the Kasumi clone Phase 4. Both Ein and Hayate also work well with each other in a tag team in that same game.

For Hitomi's final battle against Hayate (as Ein) in DOA4's Story Mode, Hayate returns to his old Karate fighting style that he possessed in DOA2. He also answers to "Ein", and makes no effort to correct Hitomi's mistake in addressing him by his false identity.

His name means 'squall' or 'hurricane'.

Hayate & Ryu Hayabusa are best friends and friendly rivals.

As Ein, he wears similar clothes to Neo ('The One') from The Matrix, and his name can be translated as 'one'.

The 'Ein' form of Hayate is not a playable character in story mode.

Hayate is shown in Ayane's CG ending protecting her and fighting DOATEC's army while they move on with their assault.

In DOA2, DOA3, and DOA4, Ein had a unique tag outro with Jann Lee, however, this was removed from DOA5 for unknown reasons and replaced with a generic outro.
