James Logan High School is a public secondary school in the New Haven Unified School District. Logan High School is the only public high school in the City of Union City, California. James Logan High School, most often referred to as just "Logan" by citizens, is near center of Union City right across from City Hall Offices and Police Station.

Demographics
James Logan High School is the largest high school in Northern California and has an enrollment over 4000 students serving all of Union City and parts of Hayward (ranging from grades 9-12). During the 2015-16 school year, 4000 students in grades nine through twelve were enrolled at the school. Logan's ethnic demographics for the previous year consisted of 4% Pacific Islander, 44% Asian, 31% Hispanic, 8% African American, 7% White and 3% Other.[1]
Campus
The original small campus was established in the fall of 1959, built for 1,200 students which was later expanded to 3,000 in 1980 and 4,000 in 1992 as more students from neighboring cities of Fremont,Newark,Hayward,San Leandro attended school. In 1992, a two square block property west of H Street, saved for a flower shop, was acquired through eminent domain and added to the campus (which was dubbed the "Logan annex").[2] The school in 1959 consisted of one long single story building which is still used today. There are around 150 staff members and 152 classrooms in use. The campus is divided into three 'houses', each house administrated by a separate staff and office.The school has Principal and a Vice to oversee each house.[3] Students at the school speak 27 different languages. Approximately 30% of the students are recent immigrants from over 60 different countries.[4]
Performing arts center
A 50,000 sf center opened on March 31, 2010, and houses a 599-seat music / drama theater and performing arts classrooms.There is also a built-in press box which overlooks the football stadium.
School facilities
There a 3,000-seat pavilion gymnasium and dance studio. An original football stadium open with the school.Later in 1985 artificial track was put in and the seating capacity was change to 4,000 seats along with field lights. Stadium is now used for high school graduations,relay for life events and other events . New basketball courts and tennis complex with lighting opened in 2005 part of bond measure .The school is also home to Olympic-size swimming pool and locker rooms complex.In 2014 a bond passed in future will include new track and Field, Beachers Stands,Turf and Scoreboard .
Awards
Logan High School has been recognized by a number of academic awards. In 1994 and 1998, it was recognized as a California Distinguished School by the California Department of Education.[5] It was one of the first high schools in the nation to be awarded the national award for Excellence in Education.[6] Logan was recognized in 1983 and 1987 as a Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.[7]
Activities
Speech and Debate
The James Logan High School Speech and Debate (“Forensics”) team was founded by Tommie Lindsey Jr. in 1984. Since then, Mr. Lindsey has become one of the top coaches in the nation, and The James Logan High School Forensics program has been recognized by Oprah, Jim Lehrer, and CBS 5 News for its excellence. Despite private and prominent public schools’ success in the activity, James Logan has put the diverse community of Union City on the national map for forensics competition excellence. As of 2011, James Logan has consecutively won the School of Excellence Award since its inception into the National Forensics League (NFL). In addition to participating in national competition, the James Logan team attends league-level tournaments and the state tournament. The team also hosts a tournament every year during the M.L.K. Jr. holiday. [8]
Band and Color Guard
The Marching Band and Color Guard at James Logan High School has won two WSMBC (Westerns States Marching Band Conference) championships (1997, 1999) and ten Western Band Association championships (2000–2002, 2004–2010).[citation needed] James logan held a seven year win streak. The band and color guard performed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. James Logan World guard participates in WGI (Winter Guard International) and has won ten consecutive gold medals (1998–2007).[9] They took a year off in 2008 to perform with the band in the Beijing Olympics. They returned to WGI the following year (2009) to achieve second place, and then reclaimed the gold medal in Scholastic World in 2010.
