Julio Mario Santo Domingo Braga (1958 – March 2009) was the eldest son of Julio Mario Santo Domingo and Edyala Braga, of the same family as Eduardo Braga, current governor of Amazonas. He was the director of the Santo Domingo Group, his family's conglomerate of more than 100 companies.[1]

Biography

He studied literature at Columbia University[2] and law at Panthéon-Assas University.[3] Throughout his life, he was passionate about literature of all periods but especially French literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.[4] He was a collector of printed books and manuscripts.[2] He had a particular regard for Marcel Proust, but he also greatly admired and collected the works of Baudelaire, Rimbaud and Verlaine.[2] He had huge collections of rock and roll and antique Chinese opium paraphernalia,[5] and was an ardent fan of AS Saint-Étienne, a French soccer team.[2][4]

He married Vera Rechulski from São Paulo and had two children:

He is also survived by his parents and by two half-brothers:

  • Alejandro Santo Domingo, a financier and the family's successor as director of the Santo Domingo Group
  • Andrés Santo Domingo, a music industrialist whose 2008 wedding to the socialite Lauren Davis was a "society" spectacle in the pages of US Vogue magazine

He died in New York from cancer that was diagnosed in October 2008.[1][4]
