– Speaking to reporters in Ottawa, Via Rail President and CEO Paul Côté explains the company's plans to expand to offer high-speed rail service in Canada. He further noted that ridership has increased by 33% since 1990 mostly attributed to capital improvement projects. Among the projects being investigated for future improvements is a study to bring high-speed service between Quebec City and Windsor that could bring recommendations by 2010.[1]

- – Washington Metro accident occurs when two afternoon southbound Metrorail trains on the Red Line are in a rear-end collision between the Takoma and Fort Totten stations in Northeast Washington, D.C., United States, killing eight passengers and the operator of the rear train, trapping several occupants, and injuring up to 100 more, the most serious accident in the Metro’s history.[3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]

– Viareggio train accident occurs at the rail station in the seaside town of Viareggio, Tuscany, central Italy, when one car of a 14-car freight train carrying liquified petroleum gas from La Spezia to Pisa jumps the rails and explodes, killing fifteen local residents and injuring over 50 shortly before midnight local time (22:00 UTC).[11]
– Southeastern starts running a weekday preview service of Class 395 Hitachi "Javelin" dual-voltage electric multiple unit trains over High Speed 1 in the south of England between London St Pancras and Ebbsfleet International, most extending to Ashford International.[12][13] Full squadron service to begin December 13.
– Two China Railways passenger trains on the Jingguang railway collide, leaving at least three people dead and 63 injured. The crash occurred at 02:34AM local time, between express trains numbered K9017 and K9063. A brake failure is reported to have caused the crash, although this has not been confirmed. This is the deadliest railway incident in China since the April 2008 Zibo Railway crash. See also: 2009 Hunan train collision.[14][15]
