Saint Louis University School of Social Work is continually ranked among the best in the nation. Established in 1930 and continually accredited since 1933,[2] the school offers students and faculty an opportunity to follow the Jesuit tradition of being “women and men for others.”
In 2013, the School of Social Work became part of SLU's College for Public Health and Social Justice, joining the School of Public Health and the program in Criminology and Criminal Justice, under the auspice of then-sitting dean Edwin Trevathan, MD, MPH, and Donald Linhorst, PhD, Director of the School of Social Work.
They charged the college to “boldly lead in teaching, researching, and providing services to those most affected by the complex factors that undermine health and welfare.”

History
In July 2013, Saint Louis University unveiled the College for Public Health and Social Justice as a new academic unit, unifying the School of Public Health, the School of Social Work, and the Criminology and Criminal Justice program.[3]
“All three are not satisfied with simply pursuing new knowledge, but push their faculty and students to be lifelong men and women for others who translate knowledge into sustained service benefiting humanity,” said SLU leadership.
Social justice, as defined within the Catholic and Jesuit traditions, became the moral foundation for the new College.[4]
The School of Social Work is one of nine graduate schools within Saint Louis University, founded in 1818, by the Most Reverend Louis Guillaume Valentin Dubourg, S.S. SLU is the oldest university west of the Mississippi River and the second-oldest Jesuit university in the nation.

Tegeler Hall, located at 3550 Lindell Boulevard, is named after Jerome F. Tegeler, a 1929 SLU graduate and member of the Board of Trustees who generous donation made the structure a reality.[8] His son, Timothy Tegeler, continues the family's commitment to SLU and the School of Social Work.
Doerr Center for Social Justice Education and Research
The Emmet J. and Mary Martha Doerr Center for Social Justice Education and Research[9] is an independently funded center within the School of Social Work that promotes long range solutions to social problems through education and research.
The center was established in 1996 through the vision of Father William J. Hutchison, SJ, a former dean of the School of Social Work. It was funded through an endowment by the Doerrs, the family of a 1937 graduate of the School, and through contributions by faculty and friends of the School.
