The Light Between Oceans is an upcoming 2016 American-British drama film written and directed by Derek Cianfrance and based on the novel of the same name by M. L. Stedman. The film stars Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Rachel Weisz. The film is scheduled to be released by Touchstone Pictures on September 2, 2016.[2][3]

Synopsis

Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender), a lighthouse keeper, and his wife Isabel (Alicia Vikander) are living off the coast in post World War I Western Australia. One day, the couple rescue a baby girl who has washed up on an adrift rowboat and decide to informally adopt her as their own, whom they name Lucy. But as Lucy grows older, Tom and Isabel discover the consequences of raising the child when a visit to the mainland and an encounter with a particular woman, (Rachel Weisz), threaten to break apart their blissfully happy family.

DreamWorks acquired the rights to the novel on November 27, 2012, with David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford producing,[4] Derek Cianfrance to direct,[5] and with Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Rachel Weisz starring.[6][7][8] Participant Media co-produced the film.[9]

Filming

Production was due to start in September 2014, with filming locations including in the Marlborough Region in New Zealand and Australia.[10][11] On September 12, 2014, it was reported that the film crews were spotted scouting locations for the filming in Dunedin and Otago Peninsula in New Zealand.[12] On October 22, the crew was spotted shooting at the former Dunedin Prison in Dunedin, three weeks shooting was taken place in the city.[13] In late October, filming was taken place on Stuart Street, where the crew was spotted filming in front of former King Edward Technical College's building.[14] In Dunedin, filming was taken place at different locations including Otago Peninsula, Port Chalmers and the former Dunedin prison.[15] The production then moved to Central Otago's village Saint Bathans, where they filmed for a week and the filming in New Zealand concluded in mid-November. Footage aboard a steam train was filmed in October inside a refurbished wooden "bird cage" passenger carriage from the Pleasant Point Railway in South Canterbury. Mainline Steam Heritage Trust used Ja 1240 "Jessica" for the movie and was transferred from the trust's Christchurch depot to Dunedin for filming to take place.[13][14]

On November 17, the production moved to Australia and filming began in Stanley, Tasmania.[16] Where the crews transformed some locations in the town including the pier, which was refurbished, and the road, which was covered in gravel.[17][18]

Release

The Light Between Oceans will be distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures through the Touchstone Pictures banner, being the last DreamWorks film to be released under the original agreement with Walt Disney Studios.[19][20][21] In February 2016, Disney announced the film would be released in North America on September 2, 2016.[22] Disney will also distribute overseas, except in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, where distribution will be handled by Mister Smith Entertainment through other industries.[23] While, Arthouse will distribute the film in Russia.[24] eOne will release the film in the United Kingdom.
